In Loving Memory of Michael S. Peragine
June 28, 1947 – May 31, 2025
Michael S. Peragine, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, fearless entrepreneur, and lifelong family man, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, surrounded by his family in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He lived a beautiful, full life, rich with purpose, laughter, and countless quiet acts of kindness.
Born Simone Peragine in Queens, New York on June 28, 1947, Michael, known affectionately to many in his family as “Sy” was the beloved son of Michael and Maria Peragine. From the beginning, he had a spark that couldn’t be missed. As a teenager, he legally changed his name to Michael Simone Peragine and began blazing his own trail.
At just sixteen, he became a Master Electrician in New York, a record-breaking feat that hinted at the drive and determination that would define the rest of his life. By nineteen, he had earned his pilot’s license and launched his own electrical contracting company. A decade later, at twenty-nine, he founded his own air charter company and poured his heart into growing it with tireless energy and a bold vision.
Michael didn’t just build businesses, he built a life rooted in care and precision. He was a perfectionist, in the most endearing way. If there was a project going on, and he wasn’t doing it himself, he was definitely managing it, pulling up a chair beside the electrician or handyman and offering commentary so sharp and funny that most of them ended up laughing and saying he should join the crew. His standards were high, but so was his warmth. He made things better, whether it was fixing a crooked wire, a family gathering, or someone’s mood.
At the center of his life was his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) who he adored completely. Their love story spanned over fifty beautiful years. Michael was the kind of man who would call Betty just minutes after she left the house, not because he needed anything, but just to ask when she’d be coming back. That was his way, tender, loyal, and quietly romantic.
Together, they raised three children, Denise, Michael, and James; and built a home full of love, discipline, support, and laughter. Michael was present for everything. He showed up for his family, in all the ways that mattered. He was their rock, their advisor, their comic relief, and their biggest fan.
He was a deeply proud grandfather to Mathew, Paulie, Ava, Luke, and Dakota. His face would light up at the mention of them. He loved teaching them, sharing stories, and watching them grow. They were his heart.
In 1994, Michael was elected Mayor of Oyster Bay Cove and served two consecutive terms. He took the role seriously and enjoyed it deeply, always leading with integrity and genuine care for his community, all while running businesses and raising his family.
Michael also loved to travel with his family. Some of their most cherished memories were made during summers at Lake Winnipesaukee, where he loved boating, fishing, and simply being together. Those were his favorite days, full of sunshine, peace, and the people he loved most.
Holidays at the Peragine home were legendary. The food was abundant (especially pasta), the house was warm, and the laughter was loud. Michael had a signature sense of humor, complete with some of the corniest jokes imaginable. He had a gift for making people laugh, even when they didn’t want to and always made sure those around him felt seen and loved.
Michael lived with intention, gave with humility, and loved without condition. He showed up every single time. He was someone you could count on, someone who would quietly help without ever needing credit. His love language was action, and his legacy is one of integrity, connection, and joy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty; his children, Denise, Michael, and James; his grandchildren, Mathew, Paulie, Ava, Luke, and Dakota; and the many, many people who loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Maria Peragine.
As so many have said, “They broke the mold when they made Michael.” His presence filled the room. His laughter filled your heart. His life filled the world around him with warmth and meaning.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held on June 27, 2025, at:
Shelter Rock Church
178 Cold Spring Rd, Syosset, NY 11791
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to share the love of God with others, build something with your hands, or take a peaceful ride on the water, just as Michael would have done. Michael had a deep and abiding love for the Lord, and one of his greatest hopes was that others would come to know and share in that love as well.
